BMP Services Enzymatic Hydrolysis & Fermentation

Dr. Mark Wilkins using the 1liter Parr Reactor
Dr. Mark Wilkins, BMP Director, pretreating switchgrass in a 1 L Parr Reactor.

The BMP has extensive experience in pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of grains and lignocellulosic biomass and can assist in the development of pretreatment strategies to prepare biomass for subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. The BMP has three 3L Eppendorf® Bioreactors for small-scale continuous, fed batch and batch fermentations.

For pretreatments, the BMP is equipped with a fluidized sand bath with 45 ml tube reactors, a 1L Hastelloy C-276 Parr reactor (up to 1000 psig (69 bar) at 350 °C), a 600ml SS 316 high pressure Parr reactor (up to 5,000 psig (345 bar) at 350 °C), and a 3.75L SS 316 Parr reactor (up to 3,000 psi (200 bar) at 500 °C). We also can perform lignin and polysaccharide analysis of lignocellulosic biomass, and analysis of sugars and fermentation products via HPLC with refractive index detection.
